The Chilean senate has approved the country’s ratification of the convention overseeing fishing in the South Pacific.

The news means the South Pacific Fisheries Regional Management Organization (SPRFMO) is one step closer to becoming a legally binding treaty to its members, instead of a voluntary commitment as it is now.

Chile’s fisheries directorate Subpesca said the ratification must now be approved by the Chilean foreign ministry, after which the country can send its “instrument of ratification” to the SPRFMO’s secretariat.

The SPRFMO will enter into force 30 days after it receives Chile's ratification.
