Salmonid exports totaled $2.47 billion (€1.97 billion) through Dec. 31, a 6.4 percent increase over 2007, according to the fisheries export report of the Fisheries Promotion Institute (IFOP) in Chile.
Chile’s total salmonid exports were up 2.5 percent from 2007, amounting to 48,600 tons. Of that total, frozen products accounted for 34,991 tons or 72 percent, while fresh refrigerated products hit 8,218 tons, or 17 percent, with the remaining lines accounting for 11 percent.
This increase was due to the fact many companies had to bring forward harvesting on account of ISA, and had to export fish that should have remained longer in the water but could not for fear they would become contaminated.
