Modifications to the General Fisheries and Aquaculture Law (LGPA) were approved Wednesday after lengthy proceedings.

The most significant modifications include a 25-year term for new permits that comply with at least 50 percent of the environmental and sanitary conditions set out, and the approval of the mechanism for constituting mortgages on such permits.

One of the major changes is a harder line on sanitary and environmental regulations for salmon farming, including hefty penalties for companies who breach the regulations, and in special cases, penal sanctions for those companies responsible.
