The item is being well-received, Bruce Schactler of United Fishermen of Alaska (UFA), who is leading the effort to promote canned salmon to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food aid programs, told Intrafish.
“It just seems very well accepted, it’s easy for them to use,” Schactler said. “It’s the only solid animal protein in the Food Aid program.”
It’s Alaska’s third year in the program. Canned salmon is being purchased from Alaska by the USDA and delivered to the hungry in Africa, Guatemala, Jamaica and Cambodia.
