The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) in British Columbia has been delisted as a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratory over “concerns which may have led to questionable ISA test results.”

In Canada, infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is a federally reportable disease, meaning all suspected cases must be immediately reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for a follow-up investigation and testing.

In late 2011, the former OIE reference laboratory at the AVC reportedly found evidence of ISA.

Any suspected cases of ISA must be then confirmed at a designated federal laboratory, so the National Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory, overseen by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), subsequently conducted testing of fish samples.
