Canadian commercial fisheries, aquaculture and processing companies provide roughly 83,000 jobs with $7 billion in output annually, but The Conference Board of Canada says the industry can and needs to do more.
On Thursday the board released a new report, "Strengthening Canada's Commercial Fisheries and Aquaculture: From Fin to Fork," which states the country's commercial fisheries and aquaculture sector need to take advantage of the growing demand for fish and seafood.
By improving harvesting and processing methods, protecting the environment and resource and modernizing governance, Canada can reverse the trends of under harvested fish stocks and curb frequent mislabeling, according to Jean-Charles LeVallee, senior research associate for the board.
