Calvo halted operations after the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) established a 40-day tuna closed season. IATTC regulates fishing of tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean and has 15 member countries, including El Salvador.

Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Peru also had to comply with the closed season.

The temporary stoppage of El Salvador operations started Sept. 16, affecting some 800 employees. They received salary advances while the stoppage lasted.

El Mundo reported that, despite the temporary stoppage of operations at the Punta Gorda plant, Calvo will proceed with plans to increase exports from El Salvador.
