The U.S. House of Representatives voted Monday to repeal the provision, which has brought millions of dollars in damages to companies that catch and process shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico, and to harvesters and processors of Alaska salmon.
The language to repeal the amendment -- known as the Continued Dumping and Subsidy Offset Act of 2000 -- was contained in a bill to cut spending by about $40 billion (€33.3 billion) over five years. The measure passed 212-206.
Critics call the law a prime example of government welfare for corporations and businesses, but fishermen, processors and other in companies impacted by cheap imports say the money paid to them from tariffs collected on foreign imported products allows them to stay in business.
