The Stinson Seafood plant in Propsect Harbor has been in operation for 135 years, and closing it was not an easy decision, Bumble Bee CEO Christopher Lischewski told IntraFish, but the combination of quota cuts and excess capacity at the company's plant in New Brunswick, Canada, sealed the Maine plant's fate.

"There was some science recently conducted on the herring fishery we are dependent on, and as part of the research it led in our opinion to a very conservative finding, but nevertheless a finding that caused the National Marine Fisheries Service to reduce the catch quota from 145,000 tons to 91,000 tons," said Lischewski.
