London-based British Seafood served legal notice Friday to Seafish and the U.K. High Court, alleging Seafish unlawfully demanded £2 million (€2.5 million/$3.2 million) in import levy taxes on its seafood.

“We support the purpose of the authority, but have been advised that it has been demanding levies from us unlawfully," British Seafood CEO Mark Holyoake told IntraFish.

Seafish executives deny the claims, and allege British Seafood owes a "significant amount" in unpaid levies.

"We are in an extraordinary currency and credit situation in the world at the moment.
