Steve Norton, chief executive of Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, said if British Seafood were successful in reclaiming levies paid on imported fish, the new precedent would no doubt encourage other companies to make similiar claims against the group.
"If this were successful you could find the floodgates open -- other larger companies could follow suit," Norton told IntraFish.
The British Seafood group launched legal action against Seafish on Oct. 30 to reclaim £2 million (€2.5 million/$3.2 million) in levies it alleges were unlawfully demanded by Seafish.
