British maritime engineering firm Cammell Laird selected Rolls-Royce to design and supply machinery and equipment for the UK’s future polar research ship, in a deal worth £30 million (€38 million/$43.3 million).
The 128 meter-long Sir David Attenborough will be built at the modular construction hall at Cammell Laird’s site in Birkenhead on Merseyside.
The new polar research vessel was commissioned by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council for operation by the British Antarctic Survey.
The £200 million (€253.2 million/$288.4 million) project -- the biggest commercial shipbuilding contract in Britain -- aims to provide a major boost to shipbuilding in the North West.
