Most crews in Bristol Bay are still fishing two seven-hour openings each day, as more than 2.6 million sockeye were caught in back-to-back days Tuesday and Wednesday.

As of July 9, the total catch for Bristol Bay reached 23.8 million fish, 33 percent higher than the 17.9 million fish predicted prior to the season by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and just 4.2 million shy of the 50-year catch average.

That's good news for the 1,723 fishing vessels and their crews, who have seen catches drop from the 10-year high of 30.9
