For the first time in nearly three decades Keith Colburn isn’t in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Instead, the captain of the Wizard, one of the stars on Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch,” stood in front of members of the United State’s Senate during a hearing about the government shutdown, which has put the Oct. 15 opening of the king crab season in jeopardy.
While the Alaska Department of Fish and Game set the total catch limit (TAC) at 7.74 million pounds last week, it’s up to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to divide up the crab and assign individual fishing quotas (IFQs) to each of the permitted vessels.
The
