Quotas for this season's Bristol Bay red king crab harvest were set at 8.6 million pounds, but the season, scheduled to open Oct. 15, may be in jeopardy with the United States government still in shutdown.

Heather Fitch, BSAI area management biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, told IntraFish the quota was increased by roughly 1.2 million pounds from 2012 because of additional biomass and increased effective spawning biomass in Bristol Bay.
