Brothers Esben and Trond Helland, along with Geir Hamre and Ove Kvalheim, are behind the company. The research was started in 1997 by testing if it was safe to farm scallops commercially in fenced areas on the seabed. One goal was to document and find out how much the percentage of waste in scallop farming could be reduced.

Breakthrough for Norwegian scallop farming
Bergen, Norway: Helland Skjell AS - on Radøy, north of Bergen (Western Norway) - has finished a six-year-long research project. Its findings for the growing of scallops in bottom culture, using fences as protection, are positive for the scallop industry.
