A new study for the Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corp. (PWSAC) found salmon from the hatchery could account for 30 percent of the salmon harvest in 2010 – and that’s just one hatchery. The numbers for pink salmon are even more interesting, as the McDowell Group report says 54 percent of the statewide pink salmon harvest in 2010 could come from PWSAC hatcheries.
What about the salmon from Alaska’s other hatcheries – what percentage of the total catch do they represent?
The hatcheries in Alaska that produce “wild” salmon are the same type where farmed salmon in other parts of the world get their start – the difference, of course, being farmed hatchlings are put in pens to grow, the wild salmon set free to roam the oceans.
