As Asian tiger shrimp invade US coastal waters, the US wild shrimp industry and scientists are wondering whether these monster shrimp could upset local ecosystems, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Adult tiger shrimp, whose native habitat stretches from southern Japan through southeast Asia to South Africa can grow to the length of a man’s arm and weigh as much as a pound.

Scientists now believe the invasive species is reproducing in US waters, and could threaten naturally occurring shrimp species.

That could be a worry for commercial shrimpers in the Gulf.
