Discussions of sourcing tuna from FAD-free fisheries gained steam in 2012, with US supermarket chain Safeway committing to FAD-free tuna when sourcing for its private label tuna.

Employees and representatives of StarKist, Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea allegedly “discussed whether any of them would launch a FAD-Free product” in 2011 and 2012 emails, according to filed amended complaints in ongoing antitrust lawsuit cases. Involved in these discussions were allegedly top executives at the tuna companies and two of the parent companies.
