Former senior high ranking Soil Association officials told the program salmon farming shouldn’t be included in the soil association portfolio, labelling it a "betrayal" of the organization’s ethos because the salmon is not wild.
“By definition, organic products must be produced in as natural conditions as possible, so can caged fish be ever be called organic?” the report asked.
The 10-minute report featured Angus Macmillan, managing director of Scottish producer West Minch Salmon, who said there is a big difference between conventionally farmed fish and his operation, where reduced numbers of fish are fed naturally and reared in spacious cages in deep, tidal waters.
