Mainstream Aquaculture (unrelated to the salmon farmer) produces about 200 metric tons of barramundi a year and has recently expanded its hatchery operations in Melbourne, Australia, in anticipation of increased demand for barramundi fingerlings globally, Managing Director Boris Musa told IntraFish.
In the 2014 financial year, it is aiming to produce 20 million commercial grade barramundi fingerlings from its hatchery.
Mainstream uses selective breeding to ensure its fish are of high quality.
With a broodstock of more than 70 fish taken from the 50 million fishMainstream has produced over the past three years, Mainstream's barramundi are chosen for traits such as a faster growth rate, and bigger and broader shapes for higher fillet yield and disease resistance.
