Barents Sea Spanish cod fishery lands MSC first

Spain's largest national cod quota holder has become the country's first fishery to obtain Marine Stewardship Council certification.

Basque company Pescafria-Pesquera Rodriguez is also the first Barents Sea cod fishery to be MSC certified, the MSC said in a statement.

The assessment was led by Food Certification International.

Founded in 1940, Pescafria-Pesquera Rodriguez markets its products under the Pescafria brand. The family-owned company holds 27.50 percent of the Spanish cod quota, translating into around 4,000 metric tons.

The UK is the company’s major market for seafood products and frozen cod fillets.
