The Oslo-listed company had announced some two years ago that it would phase out its trout farming to focus on salmon.

Its move means the end of trout farming in the Faroe Islands -- although one small Faroese company still has a few trout, these will also be slaughtered soon.

When farming first started in the Faroe Islands, around the end of the 1960s, trout was the first one to go in the pens.

Bakkafrost CEO Regin Jacobsen said the company decided to abandon trout farming after finding out that it was more profitable to only focus on salmon.
