While schools have been allowed to buy pollock for their lunch programs, Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP) have been working to teach educators about the differences in the types of pollock available to them, and the importance of feeding kids high-quality fish that makes them want to eat more of it, and not less.

Congress is working to pass a bill that would improve nutrition requirements for schools and provide them with more money to spend on healthy foods.



States get money from the federal government based on how many school lunches they serve, and that money can be used only to purchase products through the USDA Commodity Food Program, so getting Alaska pollock added to that program is a big boon for the industry, Pat Shanahan, program director for GAPP, told IntraFish.
