Since 2007 -- as Chile’s salmon industry was facing its worst crisis -- Australis’ sales have rocketed by 1,580 percent. Now its solid finances and large smolt business could make it a force to reckon with as the industry grows.
Based in Puerto Montt, Australis is currently owned by Isidoro Quiroga, a major shareholder in Chile’s second largest electricity generator, Colbun.
The group entered the salmon farming industry in 2007 with its purchase of Australis Mar, before acquiring Chile’s largest juvenile producer Landcatch Chile in 2009.
