The producer, whose name was not revealed, impressed Auchan with its sustainable producing methods, according to the report.
Auchan, which has an 11.7 percent seafood market share in France and sells more than 40 000 tons of fish annually, is following the lead of rivals Carrefour and Intermarche by adopting a more sustainable sourcing strategy, the report said.
Auchan aims to sell 1, 000 tons of tilapia alongside other sustainably produced species such as sole, place, and turbot, the report said.
Around 70 percent of all seafood purchases in France are made through supermarkets and hypermarkets.
