Some of the shallow ponds – which measure 600 feet long and 50 feet wide – are a dull green color while others are a bright ruby red. The less vibrant ones house Cyanotech’s signature product – Spirulina – which is marketed as a nutritional product for the nutraceutical industry.
The red ponds are home to the company’s other product – astaxanthin – a color additive for the aquaculture industry and an antioxidant for health-conscious consumers.
While spirulina is the company’s higher grossing product, the company sees the majority of future growth coming from its astaxanthin products – branded under the name NatuRose for the aquaculture industry and BioAstin for the vitamin and cosmetic markets.
