The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) rushed to reassure seafood buyers on Wednesday that Alaska salmon is still sustainable despite its upcoming loss of the Marine Stewardship Council's (MSC) eco-label.
ASMI said Alaska salmon processors are already working with customers to begin the transition from MSC.
On Tuesday, a group representing the bulk of Alaska's salmon suppliers announced the fishery would not seek MSC recertification when the current certification expires at the end of October.
Alaska officials noted in a statement Wednesday "that the MSC certification did not make Alaska salmon sustainable.
