Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) Executive Director Alexa Tonkovich said she isn't too worried about competing with the newly approved genetically modified salmon in stores.

"I think it will be one more competitor in the US market and we'll just continue to differentiate ourselves ... even in light of this decision," she told IntraFish after the announcement. "I would guess the product wouldn't get much traction in Alaska, but I say that as an Alaskan.

"Without proper labeling it will be more difficult for Alaska seafood to distinguish our product in the market.
