Funding for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is at risk for being slashed by $2.88 million (€2.6 million), United Fishermen of Alaska (UFA) Executive Director Julianne Curry told IntraFish.
The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development (DCCED)'s finance subcommittee recommended the cut because "the Alaska state budget is in a state of turmoil," Curry said, adding that the state is looking at a $3.5 billion (€3.1 billion) budget deficit. "They're looking to dramatically decrease every single budget."
