Fatima Ferdouse, chief of INFOFISH’s Trade Promotion Division, speaking Tuesday at the 2008 Seafood Summit, said more value-added products are going into Asian markets, the result of growing affluence and global trends toward healthier eating.
Several key species have exemplified and helped drive the trend.
Vietnamese catfish “has created a market for frozen fillets in Asia that never existed before,” said Ferdouse, and some 30,000 metric tons to 40,000 metric tons of the fillets now make their way into Asia.
“People are just waiting for convenience products," she said.
