Asda, owned by Wal-Mart, took the dramatic step on Feb. 1 of banning sales of all monkfish (Lophius piscatorius or L. budegassa) in its more than 300 stores, with the ban set to go into effect Feb. 17.
“We’ve decided to ban monkfish sales as a precaution until the industry takes appropriate action to ensure its long-term survival,” Chris Brown, Asda’s sustainable and ethical sourcing manager, said in a statement.
