The chain is a major buyer of Alaska salmon and is heavily committed to sourcing from MSC-certified fisheries, Chris Brown, ASDA's head of ethical and sustainable sourcing, told IntraFish.

If the Alaska fishery didn’t manage to sort out a new MSC client to follow on from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), some retailers would look at other sourcing options, he said.

"It would be disappointing to lose one of the most important MSC-certified fisheries,” said Brown.

Although the current MSC certificate is valid until October 2012 -- when the fishery must undergo its second reassessment -- a client must be found this year to replace ADF&G, which no longer wishes to sponsor the fishery.
