For years, NGOs have produced “eat” and “avoid” lists for the world’s seafood, and put a huge effort into distributing them far and wide. From the Monterey Bay Aquarium to Greenpeace to the IUCN, everyone wanted to have their say.

The problem? After everyone's given their two cents, the overall message is confused. Sometimes, even the same organization says different things.

Take the example of cod in the North Sea. According to the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) recent guidelines (click here to see them for yourself) -- which use a green, amber and red traffic light system to pass judgment on a fishery's sustainability -- North Sea cod is in the red.
