As the Arctic Ocean ice melts, new studies predict the vast ocean area will, within a decade, be free of ice during summers. That means ships will use the route to cut down on travel times, oil and gas exploration companies will be itching to find new fuel stashes, and fishing fleets and seafood companies will be off on a mad scramble to stake territory and lay claim to these virgin fishing areas.

Trying to make sense of the coming changes and preventing worse-case scenarios from occurring will be topics for discussion among the attendees to the International Arctic Fisheries Symposium, being held Monday through Wednesday in Anchorage, Alaska.
