Arctic char or charr (Salvelinus alpinus) is farmed on a small scale currently, in Canada, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

The product is in demand -- and production is on the up. Sweden for instance is in the process of developing Arctic char farming, and aims to produce 40,000 metric tons in the next six to seven years.

Norwegian production of Arctic char is currently typified by land-based production, usually under small licenses with high production costs.

Industry members hope the authorities will open up for pen-based production in fresh water, and in the autumn of 2011, Aketun Fisk, a small family business, was granted a license for 300 metric tons at Fyresvatnet lake in Telemark.
