Land-based salmon farming can be profitable if the projects are big enough, and some of the largest net-pen operators are listening, according to Israeli aquaculture company AquaMaof.

Currently the company is discussing projects with farmers in the United States, Canada, Scotland, South America, and even Norway for building large-scale, commercial Atlantic salmon farms.

Gary Myers, director of technology at AquaMaof, told IntraFish, the projects, estimated in the $50 million (€36.3 million) to more than $100 million (€72.7 million) range, will all produce upwards of 10,000 metric tons annually, a figure he says makes it a "proper facility."
