“The room for expansion is huge,” Shawn McWhorter, a research associate and aquaculture specialist at Ohio State University, told IntraFish.
But aquaculture isn’t that simple, he said.
The first thing McWhorter advises farmers to do is make sure there’s a market – someone who will buy the fish. Then, pick the species. Finally, based on the species, figure out a system to raise the fish.
Many farmers in the Midwest want to raise yellow perch because they’re familiar with catching that species in the wild and eating it.
