The reputable Smithsonian Science News published an article last week saying cobia have escaped from offshore Ecuadorian cages and begun a "rapid spread" that "could have far-reaching impacts on fisheries and marine ecology," and aquaculture expert Dan Benetti believes that those scientists could have been more caution before releasing their statement.

"There is no reason to be alarmed," Benetti, who is the director of aquaculture at the well-known University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, told IntraFish.

The article, backed by Smithsonian scientists, warns of the cobia's "potential for major disruption of the area's ecosystems."
