Trawling  and gill netting targeted at deep water species in the northeast Atlantic are to be gradually phased out in two years time.

The European Commission has proposed a regulation banning these gears in deep water fisheries that is expected to come into force this year. The ban will come into effect two years after the regulation comes into force officially.

Fishing with these gears in waters deeper than 400 meters will be banned and Scottish fishermen are preparing to fight the proposals, in alliance with Spain and France.
