Pangasius processors in the Mekong Delta suffered a shortage of raw material in 2009 with many factories operating at 50 percent capacity.
Fish farmers were opting to leave ponds empty due to poor prices, said Le Chi Binh, vice chairman of the An Giang Fisheries Association (AFA).
“The processors buy raw material at VND 14,800 (€0.56/$0.80) to VND 15,200 (€0.57/$0.82) per kilogram. Meanwhile, the cost of fish is VND 16,000 (€0.60/$0.87) per kilogram: the fish farmer loses VND 1,000 (€0.04/$0.05) per kilogram,” he said.
