Apart from the side story (regarding the United Kingdom and Ireland being blamed for not utilizing European Union (EU) funds), which detracted from an otherwise interesting presentation on ‘sustainability in fishing communities’ I attended in Brussels last week, something drew my attention with regard the EU’s attitude towards the long-term survival of fishermen.

Commissioner Maria Damanaki, while saying she is aware that young people are no longer attracted to a career at sea, added: “Let’s be honest; the loss of jobs in the fishing sector is likely to continue and will hit fishing-dependent communities.
