Kentucky may always be known as the horse capital of the world, but a nutrition company hopes its residents and global consumers may get to know the state as a tilapia grower as well.

Alltech, a $1 billion (€729.9 million) feed and nutritional solutions company based in Lexington, Kentucky, began growing commercial-grade tilapia earlier this year, selling all of its harvest live to fish markets in Asia and to some local restaurants.

Although production is minimal compared to the rest of industry, harvesting approximately 15 metrics tons annually, farm manager Vaun Cummins, told IntraFish during a tour of the facility at the company’s annual symposium, that Alltech’s model gives it the potential to grow “as much as we want,” while still being profitable.
