It’s a keen topic of discussion in the aquaculture industry as to whether too many or too few species are produced.

Some use the land-protein industry as an example of how focus on a small group of key species is the recipe for success, but others strongly believe diversity is the key to cater for different markets and to offer buffers against supply shortages of one or another species.

I have to say I err on the side of the latter.

And as we at IntraFish write news story after news story about shrimp shortages and extortionate salmon prices it increasingly seems as though the industry could do with moving some eggs out of the same few baskets.
