The Alaskan fishery’s withdrawal from the Marine Stewardship Council could open doors for MSC-certified Russian salmon onto the world market, a spokesperson for the Sakhalin salmon fishery said.
Alaska salmon’s pullout of the MSC means buyers looking for MSC salmon after this October will have to turn to Russian supplies.
The only other large MSC-certified salmon fishery beside Alaska is the Iturup Island pink and chum salmon fishery represented by JSC Gidrostroy. The Far Eastern company sells its salmon to Asia, the United States and Europe through the Seattle-based Polar Bear Enterprise.
