More than half of this year's total Alaskan halibut catch has already been landed, so why has it been so hard for processors to keep enough product in stock?
Demand has been the biggest factor, sources told IntraFish. Despite slowly increasing prices, consumers are still clamoring for halibut.
Mike Okoniewski, general manager of Pacific Seafood's Alaska operations, equated this year's halibut season to the US stock market, with everyone in buy mode.
"It seems as soon as I get the fish in it disappears," he said.
