Seattle-based fishing group Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association (PSVOA) announced Friday it would take over as the client for the Alaska salmon fishery’s MSC certification, ending months of limbo over whether or not anyone would step up to sponsor the fishery’s MSC status.

The Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF) announced in January it would no longer serve as the client for Alaska salmon’s MSC certification at the request of the majority of Alaska’s salmon processors.

The move sparked debate over the merits of the MSC eco-label and the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute’s (ASMI) move toward its own FAO-based model.
