ASMI officials, meeting in Seattle last week, provided an update on their efforts to have their fisheries certified by Global Trust. The emphasis of the assessments is on fishery management, rather than stock assessments.

Officials from Global Trust are about halfway through the process of certifying Alaska salmon as being sustainably managed, and expect to make a decision by March, said Randy Rice, ASMI’s technical program director.

Following certification of salmon, the timeline is to have halibut and black cod certified in April, with crab, pollock and other major groundfish species done by the end of 2012.
