The North Pacific Fishery Management Council's (NPFMC) December meeting got underway Monday, with researchers at the Bering Sea Aleutian Islands Groundfish Plan Team presenting their recommendations of an acceptable biological catch (ABC) of well over 2 million metric tons for the Eastern Bering Sea (EBS), and 32,227 metric tons for the Aleutian Islands.

The figures are a 27.7 percent and 8.7 percent rise, respectively, over the ABC set last year by the team and approved by the Scientific Statistical Committee (SSC), which finalizes the results before presenting them to the Council to set its total allowable catch (TAC) for the next year.
