Alaska pollock numbers have been declining since 2003. James Ianelli, fisheries research scientist at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, told a group of about 100 surimi industry leaders at a conference this week the pollock fishery will reach a low point in 2008.
Pollock is one of the many fish used to make surimi seafood products, such as crab sticks, and is used in frozen fish sticks and fast-food fish sandwiches.
“It is expected that pollock will drop below critical levels by 2008,” Ianelli said.
